The title “Flow” perfectly encapsulates the essence of Dr. Anna Biela’s painting exhibition and the artworks on display. “Flow” represents a state of deep, almost mystical energy that permeates the creative process and emerges as the subject depicted on her canvases. This energy, captured and visualized, emanates from the works, becoming the ultimate expression of artistic purpose.
Dr. Anna Biela invites viewers on an immersive journey through her art, offering a profound encounter with the “Flow” that fuels her creative process. The exhibition is designed to engage audiences deeply, encouraging them to experience directly the energy woven into each piece. Every artwork represents a “fragment of Flow,” capturing moments of intense creative immersion and inviting viewers to feel and connect with the essence of these deep states.
The exhibition transcends mere visual observation, transforming into an interactive experience that fosters deeper engagement with the art. The artworks are not simply objects to be viewed; they are an invitation to enter the state of “Flow” that inspired their creation. Biela’s art breaks traditional boundaries, creating a space where viewers can feel the energy embedded in each piece, highlighting the notion that art is a living, breathing entity capable of evoking profound connection and immersion.
The exhibition explores the concept that everything in the universe is energy—flowing, connecting, and permeating all. The paintings, inspired by this flow, feature compositions created with organic lines sprayed onto the canvas, forming broader bands, planes, and concentric circles. Rendered in shades of turquoise, green, blue, and gray, these compositions display fluid color transitions from dark to light tones. This approach to line and fluid color changes has become a signature means of expressing the concept of “Flow.”
For Dr. Anna Biela, painting is a form of meditation; the resulting art emanates her own field of energy, becoming, in essence, a self-portrait. The act of painting immerses her in the state of “Flow,” which she regards as sacred and essential to creating worlds through art. The artist aspires to live in a world where art is not merely decorative but a powerful creative force. As Banksy puts it, “I want to live in a world created by art, not just decorated with it.”
The paintings in each series are part of distinct site-specific installations that capture the flow of energy within a space. Documentation of the creation process, completed installations, and accompanying texts are available on the artist’s social media: Instagram @spiritwavewriter and @anna__biela, and on Facebook at facebook.com/aniabiela.
Dr. Anna Biela is a Polish-Canadian artist and graphic designer with extensive academic and professional experience shaped by years of intensive creative work. Her artistic journey began at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, where she studied graphic design. After graduating in 2002, she continued her studies at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree for her project, New Era in Graphics – Prism.
From 2007 to 2011, Biela studied at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In 2016, she defended her doctoral thesis in Warsaw at the Academy of Fine Arts. Her doctoral work, Identity in the Face of the One, and her painting series 10N3 have been widely presented across Poland and Europe.
For over two decades, Biela has developed her artistic practice around the concept of “flow”—the flow of energy and state of spirit. She specializes in plein air painting and site-specific installations, combining spray paint with various surfaces such as canvas and walls. Many of her murals, a significant part of her work, are created on designated graffiti walls of fame, allowing her pieces to harmoniously integrate with their surroundings and create a unique dialogue between art and space. The transient nature of graffiti and street art means that some murals are painted over time, contributing to the evolving dialogue within these public spaces.
Biela’s work evolves through numerous artist residencies in Europe, with the creative process documented on social media. Since 2012, she has served as a curator for MADOA (Multicultural Art and Design Open Air), where she has led easel and mural projects in the public spaces of Wrocław, including the MADOA PARK ART project. In 2023, she opened MADOA VIEW ROOM, an exhibition space for MADOA residents. Her murals can be admired in Wrocław and in cities such as Bethlehem, Amsterdam, London, Novi Sad, Porto, Warsaw, and numerous other locations across Poland.
Anna Biela is a member of the Association of Polish Visual Artists (ZPAP) and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her work, which combines various painting techniques, is both visually captivating and emotionally profound. Often using a limited color palette, primarily in shades of green and blue, she captures subtle rhythms of lines and smooth tonal transitions.
As an artist, curator, and critic of her own spirit, Dr. Anna Biela continuously pushes the boundaries of abstract art, inviting viewers to explore deeper layers of reality. Her work creates a unique dialogue between humanity and nature, revealing metaphysical dimensions.
